Majority of Czechs would vote to stay in the EU, poll shows

If a referendum on Czech membership in the European Union were held today, 55% of citizens would vote to remain, while just under a quarter would support leaving. The rest are undecided, according to an exclusive NMS survey for Novinky.cz.

Although Czechs remain generally skeptical of the EU, most do not wish to leave. Support for membership varies sharply by political affiliation. It is strongest among voters of the centre-right Spolu coalition (95%) and the Mayors and Independents (87%). Among supporters of the Motorists’ party 57% would vote to stay.

Voters for the opposition ANO party are more divided: 44% would choose to remain, 33% would opt to leave, and the rest are unsure.

At the opposite end of the spectrum are voters for the SPD party, with only 12% favoring continued membership, and Stačilo! where support drops to just 10%. Despite their vocal criticism of the EU, these groups represent a minority view in Czech society.

ANO, which is in the process of forming a new government, has ruled out the possibility of a referendum being held on continued membership in the EU or NATO.
