Main Prague refugee processing centre overwhelmed

A centre for processing Ukrainian refugees at Prague’s Congress Centre has become overwhelmed and will not accept any more arrivals for a period of 24 hours.

The mayor of Prague, Zdeněk Hřib, said on Monday afternoon that the Congress Centre did not have enough staff to deal with the influx of people. He said he would call on the minister of the interior, Vít Rakušan, to divide refugees more evenly among assistance centres in individual regions. Mr. Hřib also said he would contact the army for help.

The national fire service said that it would ferry refugees to less busy centres by bus.

Minister Rakušan said on Sunday that there were around 100,000 Ukrainian refugees in the Czech Republic.
