This week in Mailbox we quote from e-mails sent in by listeners from the United States, Canada, Bangladesh and the Czech Republic and answer a question concerning the largest bird species living in this country. Listeners quoted: John Schneider, Tony Prescott, John Cebasek, Jason, and Dewan Rafiqul Islam.

The Czech Radio building
Thanks for tuning in to Radio Prague’s weekly Mailbox where we read from letters and e-mails sent in by our listeners from around the world. We are always happy to receive you reception reports commenting on the quality of our transmissions in different parts of the world. We are even happier if you include a little personal note in them, as did for example John Schneider from the state of New York:

“I really enjoyed listening to Radio Prague. I love learning all I can about other places in the world, especially local daily lives and customs! I truly learned a lot by listening to your station!”

Before we even found out we had a listener in our neighbourhood, he is already leaving for his home country. He is Tony Prescott:

“I have been living around the corner from you in Vinohrady for the last three months but sadly have to return to Australia at the end of August. Hasn't stopped me tuning in to Radio Prague to keep up to date though!”

We hope you’ll keep tuning in to stay in touch with Czech happenings after you return back home as well.

John Cebasek from the Canadian province of Ontario says he would like to visit this country, too:

“I was 'burning the midnight oil' fixing some software bugs and heard your program this morning. I really enjoy your program, it is most informative. I've got to plan a trip to Prague one day.”

A listener who signed only as Jason tunes into our programmes in the United States:

“I am writing to you from the state of Florida here in the United States. I love your programs here on Radio Praha, keep up the great work. An adoring fan from the U.S.”

The great bustard
Thank you very much. We are glad you can hear us loud and clear and enjoy our programmes.

And finally, Dewan Rafiqul Islam from Bangladesh sent us a question:

“What is the name of the biggest bird of your country?”

Three birds are cited as the biggest birds that can be spotted in the Czech Republic. The largest one is probably the great bustard, a rare bird which can be occasionally seen in South Moravia when it wanders away from its nesting grounds in neighbouring Austria. Its wingspan can be up to 2.5 metres wide and the bird can weigh up to 20 kilograms. The white-tailed eagle is the Czech Republic’s largest bird of prey, also with a 2.5-metre wingspan, but the most common large bird is the mute swan, plentiful on rivers and lakes, with a wingspan of just under 2.5 metres.

Your questions concerning our broadcasts and life in the Czech Republic are always welcome at [email protected] or Radio Prague 12099 Prague which is also the address for your reception reports and, of course, your answers to our monthly quiz.

Just a reminder that you still have another week to send us the name of August’s mystery man who was born in 1862 in the North Bohemian village of Jiřetín pod Bukovou into a family of a glass cutter. He went on to start his own glass cutting business in Austria and his surname today is a brand name for precision cut crystal glass.

His name along with the names of four listeners who will be picked out of the hat and receive small prizes for their correct answers will be announced in the first Mailbox in September.

That’s all for today’s Mailbox but I’ll be back next week, same time, same frequency. Until then, happy listening.
