Lucie Bílá at 60: The story of an unmistakable voice
On April 7, one of the most distinctive voices of the Czech music scene celebrated a major milestone. Singer Lucie Bílá turned sixty — and with it, more than four decades on stage marked by unmistakable energy, emotion, and a voice that audiences recognize within seconds.
Lucie Bílá was born as Hana Zaňáková in Kladno, grew up in a Slovak-Czech family in Otvovice, and originally trained not as a singer, but as a seamstress. Music, however, found her early. She studied singing at a local art school and gained her first experience in rock and metal bands like Arakain and Vitacit. It was there that her powerful voice first stood out — raw, expressive, and impossible to ignore.
Her life changed in the 1980s, when producer Petr Hannig gave her not only songs, but also a new name: Lucie Bílá. Under this name, she began building a career that would soon reach far beyond the boundaries of Czechoslovakia. The breakthrough for her came with the songs Neposlušné tenisky and Horší než kluk, which kick-started her career.
Another breakthrough came in the early 1990s. The album Missariel and the hit Láska je láska turned her into a household name. At the same time, she stepped onto the theatre stage — as Éponine in Les Misérables — and discovered another dimension of her talent. Acting and singing would remain closely intertwined throughout her career.
The years that followed brought a stream of successes. Awards accumulated — including a record number of Czech Nightingale titles — as did roles in major musicals like Dracula, Johanka z Arku, or Carmen. She performed alongside legends such as Karel Gott, filling concert halls and arenas across the country.
Producer and theatre director
In recent years, Lucie Bílá has also become a producer and theatre director. Her Divadlo Lucie Bílé in Prague carries her name — and her signature: a blend of emotion, spectacle, and personal connection with the audience.
Even today, she continues to release new music, tour, and experiment. Songs like Dobrý kafe or Fénix show that her voice — and her story — are far from finished.
On January 1, 2026, Lucie Bílá re-recorded her first song Neposlušné tenisky after 40 years. For her anniversary, Czech post issued a limited edition of postage stamps highlighting her breakthrough moments. She also released a limited set of 1,111 copies containing all 17 CDs (16 solo albums and Duety with Karel Gott).
In the spring and autumn of 2026, the Obyčejná holka tour will take place across Slovak and Czech cities, organized to celebrate her 60th birthday.
Lucie Bílá at sixty is not just a celebration of a birthday. It is a reminder of a remarkably rich career that has shaped Czech popular music for generations.
