Ležáky massacre remembered in silent ceremony

A commemorative event marking the 83rd anniversary of the destruction of the village of Ležáky in the Chrudim region was held on Sunday, traditionally without political speeches. According to Eduard Stehlík, director of the Lidice Memorial, silence befits such commemorations.

The Nazis burned down the stonemasonry village of Ležáky on June 24, 1942, as revenge for the assassination of acting Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich. It happened two weeks after the destruction of Lidice.
