International Czech Beer Star competition judges beers in Brno

A total of 271 samples of unfiltered and unpasteurised beers are being evaluated on Friday at Mendel University in Brno by ten expert committees, each consisting of three evaluators. Samples for the first year of the Czech Beer Star competition were sent by sixty-seven breweries from four countries: Czechia, Slovakia, Poland and Cyprus.

The organisers, Mendel University and the Beer Academy, have chosen an unconventional evaluation method for the beer competition, inspired by wine competitions, which involves a one-hundred-point scale. To win a gold medal, a sample must earn at least eighty-five or more points; samples with a score of seventy to eighty-four points will be awarded a silver medal. Awarded breweries can then label their bottles or cans with the appropriate medal for three years. The organisers will announce the results of Friday’s evaluation on March 4th.
