Rebels MPs leave Polish ruling SLD, form new party

A group of MPs have defected from Poland's governing SLD party. The four senators and 20 lower-house lawmakers have announced the creation of a new party called the Social Democracy of Poland. Prime Minister Leszek Miller has been facing pressure to step down in recent weeks, following dismal approval ratings.

Czech President's plane grounded

A plane carrying Czech President Vaclav Klaus was forced to turn back to Lisbon airport shortly after take-off. The Czech defence ministry said the plane had to return to the airport because of landing gear problems. No injuries were reported. Klaus had been on a state visit to Portugal.

Austria pays respect to Cardinal Koenig

Austrians have been paying their last respect to the late Cardinal Franz Koenig. The former Archbishop of Vienna died in his sleep aged 98 on March the 13th. Koenig was well known in central and Eastern Europe for his efforts to build bridges between the Catholic and Orthodox churches after the fall of communism.
