Health minister says further restrictions necessary in view of “enormous” growth in COVID-19 cases

A record 8,618 new cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus were registered in the Czech Republic on Friday. Minister of Health Roman Prymula said that the number is indicative of the exponential development of the epidemic in the Czech Republic. The reproduction number, currently lies at 1.4, which the health minister says indicates a need to introduce new restrictions.


Speaking on Friday, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said that a lockdown could be considered if the coronavirus continues to spread and called on people to respect the government measures. If a lockdown were introduced, it would be more targeted than the general closing of much of the country’s economy that took place during the spring first wave of the virus.
