Growing number of teenage girls self-harming
Child psychiatrists report a steep increase in the number of teenage girls who are self-harming. Their number is reported to have risen by 50 percent in the past decade. Doctors say the situation worsened significantly during the Covid pandemic and the social isolation that accompanied it. Annually, about 3,000 minors are hospitalized for intentional self-harm and psychiatrists say they believe this to be the tip of the iceberg. According to them many children with problems are not getting help. The problem is exacerbated by a pressing shortage of child psychiatrists and physiotherapists.
