Forest Restoration Day takes place across country for third time
Forest Restoration Day, the largest nationwide event of its kind to support forest and landscape restoration, took place in 13 places throughout the Czech Republic between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m on Saturday. The event, organized by the state enterprise Lesy České republiky (Forests of the Czech Republic), invites people to help restore forests and to learn about the work of foresters and the future shape of Czech forests after the bark beetle disaster. In addition to planting trees, volunteers help with, for example, measuring wood and building fences around new saplings. There are also programs for children on how foresters plan to return owls and raptors to the forests.
The bark beetle epidemic broke out in full force in Czech forests in 2018 and reached its peak in 2020. The first Forest Restoration Day was held in October 2019 and 32,000 people took part. It did not take place in 2020 due to the coronavirus epidemic, but last year, it was held for the second time and almost 13,000 people came and planted 69,000 trees. The event takes place in every region except Prague.
