First ever butterfly census to get underway in Czechia on Monday

The first ever butterfly census involving the public is due to get underway in Czechia on Monday, 3 June. The aim of the event, called Butterfly Half-hour, is to estimate the populations of butterflies in the country and help scientists with protecting the insects, which are rapidly disappearing from nature.

The event is organised by the international nature conservation group JARO, in cooperation with the Czech Entomological Society, the Society for the Protection of Butterflies and the Institute of Entomology of the Czech Academy of Sciences’ Biological Centre.

The public butterfly count will run until June 9. The summer edition of the event is scheduled for mid-July.
