This weekend sees the return of the International Prague Car Festival – a two-day celebration at Prague’s Letňany of tuning, racing and classic cars. Fans of racing or motorsport in the capital should definitely consider a visit. On view will be tricked out Škodas, vintage American vehicles, pretty models and much more.

I began by asking the director of the festival, Martin Apeltauer, what kinds of fans the event was likely to attract.

“I would say it is almost for everyone. Of course it is for fans of cars but not just. It is also for fans of fashion, for men, for women, for children. Really, almost anyone who likes good entertainment and wants to have an interesting weekend.”

From how far do visitors come? Is it mostly from in and around Prague or further?

“The exhibitors are from all over, not just the Czech Republic. And we expect visitors from Slovakia, Hungary and Poland. The festival, however, is more regional in flavour rather than national or international. In the future this is something we would like to change, to be able to expand.”

How many cars will be shown and what are the different types of vehicles people will be able to see?

“There will be more than 250 cars of different types, ranging from tuning cars to race cars and super sports and also classic Czech and American cars.”

How popular is tuning in the Czech Republic?

“I think it is popular, judging by the number of people involved. It is a lifestyle that requires a lot of energy and investment and those who get into it are quite visible: they are competitive and attend different tuning shows of which ours is one of the top. They can compete, win a cup, and gain appreciation from their friends and other competitors. That is what many want from the hobby.”

Tuning, just to specify, is basically the modification of a vehicle, whether to the motor or the body, which makes it unique...

“Exactly. What people really change is not important, just that their car is unique. The aim is to be different and proud of it.”

When you say that the cars are judged or that they compete, how are they judged? Are decision based solely on aesthetics or also on performance?

“It depends. Inside the hall, cars will be parked and static. But outside, visitors will be able to try a kind of racing called ‘easy drift’ which is a lot of fun. They will also be able to try driving electric cars which remain fairly uncommon.”

You touched upon classic cars as being a draw, I know they have a huge following here whether they are Czech-made like old Škodas or American... Do classic American cars also have a special place in fans’ hearts also because of this country’s history, 40 years of communism, when most of those vehicles would have been far rarer even than today?

“I think all classic cars do and Czechs are very proud of Škodas – old or new. They are part of our heritage and are appreciated. A lot of fans like the old American ones too: they are huge, they are something that will bring back memories of the past when they were scarce, there are different layers of meaning.”

Tuning girls are part of the show as well, a large part, and there is also a beauty pageant called Czech Driver Girl. What is necessary to win: just looks? Or also the ability to drive well?

“The first requirement was to own a driver’s licence confirming they were 18 years of age. Then regional events were held and fans voted on who would make it to the next round. In the end, we have six finalists who will take to the stage at the weekend and be judged by a jury. Looks – or beauty now – I think will come to the foreground rather than driving!”

What do you think will be the turnout this year and how will the fest differ from 2012?

“Well our motor show is one of unconventional cars: all the exhibits are unique and even those who came last year will find almost nothing the same. We are expecting around 10,000 people.”

Is there any one vehicle that attendees shouldn’t miss?

“It’s hard to say and each exhibit is unique. But if I had to choose one I would say a Ford Fiesta specially prepared for the World Rally Championship. It is the first time such a car will be featured at a similar event ad we are very much looking forward to it.”
