'Fairies of the Rhine' unveiled in Ljubljana

More than 140 years after it was composed, Jacques Offenbach's opera Die Rhein Nixen or the Fairies of the Rhine has finally been given a fully - staged production. The Slovenian National Theatre Opera Company is giving ten performances of the work in the main hall of Ljubljana's Cultural and congress centre.

Offenbach's opera "Rhein Nixen" premiered in Slovenia on the 13th January in a historic production. The opera was unknown at that time, as the only other time the opera had been staged was in 1864 in the imperial opera house in Vienna.

Some years ago the German agency Landgraf was looking for a suitable opera house to stage Jacques Offenbach's opera Fairies of the Rhine and Damjana Zelnik of the opera in Ljubljana told us, why the Ljubljana opera was the right choice:

"So the big question appeared who will be brave enough to put it onto stage 140 years after its creation. After the very successful world opening in January and after 12 sold out reprises there is no longer any doubt. The artistic management, soloists, the chorus and orchestra of the Slovene national opera Ljubljana have the courage, ability and the interest to do it. Of course the largest and the most demanding opera project in Slovenia needed financial support. So it became a co-production with the cultural centre Cankarjev Dom in Ljubljana and the Festspielhaus ST. Polten in Austria."

The public is impressed, the Fairies of the Rhine is very much welcomed by the public and by international critics and it is an important event of historical significance for Slovenia:

"It is difficult to be the first in staging of such an opera and it is bringing a lot of attention of the international public as an opportunity for the Slovene national opera in Ljubljana to present itself."

The Slovene national opera in Ljubljana is taking its role as ambassador for Slovenia very seriously and wants the public abroad to enjoy this great piece and so the Slovene production of the Rhine Nixen will also be performed in Winterthur in Switzerland on the 23rd and 24th of February and in St. Polten the opera will be performed in April this year.
