Experts creating 3D model of Terezín for schools, town planners and gaming companies
Experts have started scanning the town of Terezín with the help of drones. The aim of the project is to create a detailed model of the fortress town and fifteen selected monuments.
At present people interested in the tragic history of Terezin can take a virtual walk around the Terezín Memorial. Now plans are afoot to create a 3D model of the entire town enabling people to view places that are otherwise difficult to access, serve schools as an educational tool and even the town’s management itself for infrastructure development and further planning. Jan Jelínek, head of the Department of Logistics of the Ústí nad Labem Region, which commissioned the project, explains:
“The scanning will be done with the help of cutting-edge technology – light detection and ranging, laser technology and other means, but primarily it will be done with the help of drones. The drones will scan not only the large fortress as a whole, but also individual monuments. We particularly want to focus on 15 sites that we have identified in cooperation with the town of Terezín. And we want everything scanned in minute detail."
René Tomášek, the town’s mayor, is enthusiastic about the project:
“All the maps of our town that are available to date are flat - i.e. in 2D. 3D gives us the plasticity that we lack on maps. That is a huge advantage."
The drones will capture the city and its architecture in great detail. Nevertheless, Jan Jelínek says, the model will undergo minor adjustments.
"We would like to have the model minus signs, cars, garbage cans and people. We want to have a bare city. We want a model that will serve as a base that would allow viewers to transport themselves to the different stages of the town’s history. “
The model will be accessible not only to the general public in Czechia, but also to people the world over, through an app.
"One of the conditions in the public tender for this contract was the creation of an app that would be accessible to the general public on Metastore. With the help of VR glasses users will be able to walk around the town and stop at 15 selected locations where they will get detailed information about the given place in different stages of its history. We also want to be able to offer it to commercial institutions, such as gaming companies and such.”
The first ever digital model of the town of Terezín will cost the Ústí nad Labem Region CZK 1.5 million.
