Experts began test mining soil with benzene after oil tanker accident

On Thursday, under strict safety conditions, experts began removing part of the soil contaminated with benzene from the accident site in Hustopeče nad Bečvou. This comes more than a month after the crash of tankers carrying the toxic substance. The operation followed the complex task of clearing wreckage and destroyed railway infrastructure.

The Czech Environmental Inspectorate (ČIŽP) described the removal of the contaminated soil as a highly risky operation, with firefighters also monitoring benzene fumes in the air during the process. The excavated soil will be sent to a landfill for biological cleaning.
