E-bike accidents surge in Czechia
The number of traffic accidents involving e-bike riders in Czechia rose by 45 percent last year, according to newly released police statistics. In 2024, officers recorded 641 e-bike accidents, nearly 200 more than the year before. These incidents made up almost 15 percent of all bicycle accidents in the country.
According to deputy police president Tomáš Lerch, e-bike riders were involved in eight of the 24 fatal bicycle crashes last year, with seniors especially at risk. Police also noted more e-bike users ride under the influence of alcohol.
Helmet use remains a key concern. Of the 38 cyclists who died on Czech roads last year, 19 were not wearing a helmet. In response, the police have launched the eBike Bezpečně project, which aims to educate the public on safe riding practices and common mistakes.
