Czechs beat Germany on opening day of BJK Cup Finals

The first day of the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Prague brought a late-night victory by the Czech home team. Olympic silver medallist Marketa Vondroušová scored the first point in a Group D match over Germany beating the former Top 10 player Andrea Petkovic, 6-1, 6-3.

Shortly after, World No.9 Angelique Kerber of Germany triumphed over World No.3 Barbora Krejčíková, 6-7(5), 6-0, 6-4, levelling the tie at one win apiece.

However, the Czechs’ deep doubles squad clinched the victory when WTA Doubles World No.2 Katerina Siniaková and veteran doubles star Lucie Hradecká beat Anna-Lena Friedsam and Jule Niemeier of Germany, 6-4, 6-7(2), [10-8].
