Czechia to invest nearly CZK 29 billion in coal region transformation with EU funds

Czechia will use nearly CZK 29 billion from the EU’s Just Transition Fund to support the decarbonisation of coal regions in Karlovy Vary, Ústí, and Moravia-Silesia, Environment Minister Petr Hladík announced at a press conference on Thursday.

This covers 70 percent of the total funding, with six billion crowns already paid out. Accordign to Hladík, Czechia is among the top EU countries in securing these funds, aimed at helping coal-dependent regions shift to sustainable economies.

The programme supports business, research, clean energy, education, and social projects, with most funds going to skills development, land restoration, and research.

Out of 34 strategic projects, 22 will receive funding, mainly in the academic and public sectors. Among the key projects supported is the Spa Research Centre in Karlovy Vary.
