Czech women seal dramatic comeback to reach Billie Jean King Cup finals
The Czech women’s tennis team is heading to the Billie Jean King Cup finals after a dramatic qualifying victory over Switzerland. The tie was decided in the final match in Biel, where the Czechs came back to secure their place among the top eight teams.
Barbora Strýcová enjoyed a winning debut as Czech captain in the Billie Jean King Cup, guiding her team to the finals at the first attempt.
The decisive day did not start well for the Czechs. Markéta Vondroušová and Tereza Valentová lost the doubles match to Belinda Bencic and Viktorija Golubic in three sets, leaving the Czech team trailing 1–2 and on the brink of elimination.
But 21-year-old Linda Nosková turned the tie around. She won both of her singles matches over the weekend, including a crucial clash against Bencic.
In a dramatic encounter lasting more than two hours, Nosková came back from 3–5 down in the deciding set, saved three match points in a tie-break, and sealed the win. Asked afterwards what the experience had been like, she joked:
“It’s probably taken a toll on my nerves, to be honest. But I’m really happy for the team and for the Czech Republic.”
Nosková’s win leveled the tie and set the stage for Marie Bouzková, who held her nerve against Golubic, taking a tight first set in a tie-break before sealing the comeback in straight sets.
Speaking afterwards, Bouzková admitted it was a completely new experience for her:
“Of course, it was my first experience playing such a big, decisive match. I really didn’t know how I would handle it out there, but the only thing I knew was that I wanted to give it everything, to put my heart into it. Even if I had to be there for three hours, I just wanted to win it for this team.”
For Strýcová, who stepped into the role after long-time captain Petr Pála, it was an emotional and intense experience on the bench.
“These are the moments I wanted to do this for—for these intense situations and for the emotions they bring. What it’s brought us now is that we are a winning team, and you can see how happy the girls are. It’s amazing that it turned out this way.
I have so much adrenaline after the matches, but it wasn’t me on the court, it was the girls. I’m incredibly proud of what they showed over these two days. They showed unbelievable heart and fighting spirit, and they truly deserve it.”
The Czech team will now play in the Billie Jean King Cup finals after missing out last year. The eight-team tournament takes place in September in Shenzhen, China.
