Czech truck driver jailed in France over cigarette smuggling

A French court has sentenced a Czech truck driver to 15 months in prison after customs officers discovered 15,000 cartons of smuggled cigarettes in his vehicle. The haul, valued at two million euros (48.6 million CZK), was reported by the daily Le Dauphiné.

According to France Bleu, the driver has also been ordered to pay a fine equivalent to the market value of the seized cigarettes — around two million euros — to the customs authority. The driver plans to appeal the verdict.
