Czech tennis at US Open: Vondroušová joins Lehečka and Krejčíková in quarterfinals, Macháč falls to Fritz

Markéta Vondroušová has become the third Czech player to reach the US Open quarterfinals. She defeated ninth seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.

Earlier, Jiří Lehečka and Barbora Krejčíková also secured places in the last eight. Krejčíková, a two-time Grand Slam singles champion, overcame American Taylor Townsend in a three-hour match, saving eight match points to win 1-6, 7-6, 6-3. Lehečka beat France’s Adrian Mannarino 7-6, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 to equal his career-best result at a major.

Tomáš Macháč did not advance, losing to fourth seed Taylor Fritz of the United States 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.

Czech eleventh seed Karolína Muchová will play Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in the fourth round on Monday.
