Czech politicians react to end of Assad rule in Syria

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala has reacted to the fall of Syrian President Bashar Assad, who was overthrown after 24 years in power, stating that his reliance on Russia ultimately failed. He expressed hope for Syria’s future, emphasizing the importance of stability and freedom over chaos or terrorist rule.

MEP Veronika Vrecionová warned of potential consequences for Europe, including a refugee wave and the risk of Syria becoming a base for Islamist radicals. She stressed that Europe must prepare for significant new security challenges.

Senator Pavel Fischer called Assad’s fall a historic moment but emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian aid in Syria. Opposition leader Radek Vondráček cautioned that the transition could lead to instability, pointing to extremist ties among some rebel factions.
