Czech government facing vote of no-confidence

Czech MPs resumed debate on Wednesday morning over a no-confidence motion against the government of Prime Minister Petr Fiala. The opposition ANO party initiated the vote over a scandal involving a billion-crown bitcoin donation to the Justice Ministry from a man earlier convicted of drug trafficking, embezzlement, and illegal arms possession.

All three opposition parties are expected to back the motion, but do not have enough votes to topple the centre-right government. While some members of the ruling Mayors and Independents voiced frustration over how the Civic Democrats handled the scandal, party leader and Interior Minister Vít Rakušan confirmed that the Mayors will not support the motion.

A vote is expected late on Wednesday.
