Czech climber dies after 80-metre fall in Italian Dolomites

A Czech climber died on Friday in the Italian Dolomites, local media reported. The 53-year-old man fell about 80 metres while attempting to climb Ortler, the highest peak in Tyrol, together with another Czech.

The pair had planned to stay overnight at the Prayer mountain hut and continue to the summit the next day. When one of them reached the hut alone, he raised the alarm. Search efforts on Friday evening were halted due to bad weather and poor visibility.

Rescuers resumed the operation on Saturday morning with a helicopter using mobile phone tracking equipment. The climber’s body was later found at the foot of a steep wall.
