Czech canoeist Fuksa shares World Cup gold with Russia’s Petrov in Szeged

Reigning Olympic champion Martin Fuksa won the opening Canoe Sprint World Cup race in Szeged, Hungary, sharing first place with Russia’s Zakhar Petrov in the men’s C1 1000m final.

The 33-year-old Czech was in excellent form in Hungary. After winning both his heat and semifinal, he launched his attack in the final 250 metres of the race. A dramatic finish followed, with the photo finish ultimately confirming the two paddlers had recorded identical times.

It was Fuksa’s 19th career World Cup victory.
