Czech and Polish Prime Ministers sign agreement on Turów mine
The Prime ministers of the Czech Republic and Poland have signed an interstate agreement to address the impact of mining activities at the Turów brown coal mine near the Czech border. Prime Minister Petr Fiala announced the news at a press conference on Thursday after a meeting with his Polish counterpart Mateusz Morawiecki.
According to the agreement, the Czech Republic will withdraw a lawsuit it filed at the EU Court of Justice, while Poland will finance projects worth 45 million euros to help prevent the loss of groundwater across the border caused by the mine.
Until the completion of mining activities, the agreement provides for monitoring of noise pollution from the mine, air quality, as well as ground movements and groundwater levels. A special fund will also be set up to finance local and regional environmental projects.
