Covid-19: Record number of new infections on Monday

On Monday, 10,811 people tested positive for the coronavirus in the Czech Republic, a record high for the day and the third highest number since November 7. The proportion of positive test results was 42.3 percent, also a new record.

The number of Covid-19 patients in hospital rose by almost 500 to 5,395, according to Ministry of Health data. Currently, some 97,000 people are known to be infected. To date, more than 11,300 people have died of Covid-19. In November, there were nearly 5,000 fatalities. This month, 2,700 have died so far.

The epidemiological risk index remained at 71 for a third consecutive day, the equivalent of the 4th level of alert according to the government’s PES scale. However, strict restrictive measures in place since Sunday until at least January 10, correspond to the 5th (highest) level.
