Charter 77 signatory and former political prisoner Jiří Wolf dies at 74
Jiří Wolf, a former political prisoner and signatory of Charter 77, has died at the age of 74. The news was announced by historian Petr Blažek on Facebook and reported by Aktuálně.cz on Thursday.
Wolf was arrested in 1977 for supporting Charter 77 and opposing the communist regime. After documenting conditions in prison and sending information abroad, he was arrested again and sentenced to six years in prison. He was released in poor health and later took part in the anti-communist demonstrations of 1989.
In 2006, Wolf was among three former prisoners who accused former communist MP and prison officer Josef Vondruška of abusing inmates at the Minkovice prison. However, Vondruška was later acquitted by the courts.
