Charles University rector: security will remain a permanent priority

Charles University will treat safety and security as a permanent task in the years ahead, its rector Milena Králíčková said on Sunday. Speaking at a memorial event for the victims of the deadly shooting at the Faculty of Arts, she stressed that stronger security measures must be introduced sensitively.

Králíčková said many students and staff are still affected by the tragedy two years on. In response, the university has set up a resilience centre focused on mental wellbeing, expanded counselling services and increased support for those impacted.

Alongside physical security upgrades, the university is focusing on so-called “soft measures”, including more training and drills on how to escape buildings or secure rooms during an emergency. A new security department has also been established at the rector’s office to coordinate safety efforts across all faculties.
