Blesk: Oscar-winning director Jiří Menzel died after contracting coronavirus

The Oscar-winning director Jiří Menzel, who died aged 82 on September 5 this year, passed after contracting COVID-19 induced pneumonia, his widow Olga Menzelová told the tabloid Blesk. His symptoms, she said, began with high temperatures, a cough and associated pains.


Mr. Menzel was well known at home and abroad as one of the most successful directors of the Czechoslovak New Wave. He directed the 1966 film Closely Observed Trains for which he received an Oscar, as well as the 1969 movie Larks on a String.
