Babiš urges outgoing PM to reject EU’s 2040 climate goals

ANO leader Andrej Babiš has called on Prime Minister Petr Fiala (Civic Democrats) to reject the European Union’s proposed climate targets for 2040 at next week’s EU leaders’ summit in Brussels.

Babiš, who is currently negotiating the formation of a new government with the SPD and the Motorists’ party, described the summit as “crucial for the future of the Czech Republic.”

He warned that adopting the new climate goals could cause “irreversible damage” to Czech citizens, businesses, and small entrepreneurs. Speaking at a press conference, Babiš criticized Fiala for reportedly failing to defend Czech interests in the EU, accusing him of always yielding to the European Commission.

Fiala dismissed Babiš’s remarks as “ridiculous,” noting that his government has long opposed the 2040 targets, one of the reasons they have not yet been approved.
