Babiš announces 16-member cabinet plan with SPD and Motorists, SPD to head lower house
ANO leader Andrej Babiš announced on social media that his movement has agreed with Freedom and Direct Democracy party (SPD) and the Motorists on the shape of a potential 16-member government. The deal was reached after about five hours of talks, he said.
Under the plan, ANO would hold nine cabinet seats including the prime minister’s post, SPD three, and the Motorists four. SPD would also nominate the next Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, the parties said in a joint statement.
ANO would lead the ministries of finance, industry, health, labour, education, interior, regional development and justice. SPD would take charge of defence, agriculture and transport, while the Motorists would oversee foreign affairs, culture, environment, and a new ministry for sport, prevention and health.
The coalition said the new ministry highlights its focus on children’s physical activity and the fight against lifestyle-related diseases.
There will be no ministers for European affairs, legislation, or science, research and innovation. Coalition talks will continue next week on policy priorities.
President Petr Pavel said after meeting Babiš on Thursday that he will appoint a new prime minister only after the new Chamber of Deputies convenes on 3 November.
