Authorities investigate recent bear sightings in Czechia

Czech authorities announced on Friday that they are investigating several recent bear sightings across the country. Reports came from Pelhřimov in central Bohemia, the Doupov Mountains in the north-west, and the Přerov region in eastern Moravia, where hunters and locals spotted what may have been a female bear with a cub. Experts are examining the animals’ origin and potential risks.

Jiří Janota of the Czech-Moravian Hunting Union said the situation should not be taken lightly. Police confirmed that if bears are verified, they will be safely captured and quarantined, with Dvůr Králové Zoo in north-eastern Bohemia ready to take them in.

Meanwhile, experts on large carnivores have dismissed the repeated reports of bear sightings as disinformation, unnecessary panic, and the spreading of false alarms.
