ANO party files complaint with Constitutional Court against controversial pensions law

The opposition ANO party has filed a complaint with the Constitutional Court against a law which will cut the indexation of old age pensions in June. The complaint is based around the fact that the cut will be retro-active, since the increase was guaranteed by a law in force at the beginning of the year, and that the law enabling the cut was approved in a state of legislative emergency for which there was no justification. The Fiala cabinet pushed through the law thanks to its majority in both chambers, citing the poor state of public finances and the need to economize. President Pavel signed the legislation into force in view of the steep deficit in public finances, but expressed the view that it should be reviewed by the Constitutional Court.
