Annual procession of hard-boiled eggs crosses Charles Bridge again!

Legend has it that eggs were needed for the construction of Charles Bridge. But the people of Velvary brought boiled eggs and became a lasting target of ridicule.

The legend of Charles Bridge, the iconic Prague structure, tells us that eggs were needed for its construction, as they were added to the mortar mixture to strengthen it. Eggs were demanded from the settlements around Prague, but the people of the Bohemian town of Velvary understood the order in their own way. To prevent the eggs from breaking, they brought hard-boiled eggs to Prague. Since their eggs were useless, they became a target of mockery, not only from the people of Prague, but from the entire country.

The present-day citizens of Velvary proudly proclaim their hard-boiled egg tradition and have been organising festivities for ten years, culminating in a procession of egg-carriers through Mála Strana and over Charles Bridge. The procession set off again on April 13th. It was accompanied by a horse-drawn carriage bearing the famous eggs, as well as squires, a medieval band and plenty of egg-themed placades.
