A Central European life - Leon Zelman, from Poland to Vienna
Leon Zelman has died in Vienna at the age of 79. Zelman was born in Poland. At the age of 12 he was deported with his family to the Nazi concentration camp at Lodz where his parents died. In 1944 he was moved to Auschwitz with his brother -and there his brother was to die. Finally he was moved to the camp at Mauthausen in Austria where he was eventually liberated by American soldiers in 1945. He went to Vienna to study journalism and there his name became synonymous with the Jewish Welcome Service - bringing exiled jewish groups back to Vienna.
