On February 8th, the Senate approved an amendment to the Czech Constitution, which introduced direct presidential elections.
July 27th marked the official start of the 30th Summer Olympic Games in London. Czech athletes won eleven medals.
On September 14th, the government of the Czech Republic responded to a methanol poisoning scandal by declaring a ban on the sale of hard liquor.
On January 3rd, Czech-Canadian writer and publisher Josef Škvorecký passed away.
In 2011, a group of four young men from Pilsen celebrated the tenth anniversary of their band, Mandrage. The band, marked their milestone with a “10 Year Mandrage Tour” through the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Great Britain and Germany. That same year, Mandrage won the ROCK category at the TV Óčko Music Awards.
