2008 – 91st Segment: “Thin Ice”

In this series we present 100 songs which have gone down in the history of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic. On Czech Radio’s web pages you can find a poll, in which you can vote for the best hit from the past century. We continue with the year 2008.

On February 15th, Václav Klaus was re-elected president of the Czech Republic.

The Summer Olympics were held in Beijing from August 8th to the 24th. The Czech Republic won six medals.

On September 1st, shoe magnate Tomáš Baťa passed away.

Lucie Vondráčková’s song, Tenkej Led or “Thin Ice,” was the hit of 2008. It was a family project; the music was composed by Lucie’s father, Jiří Vondráček, the lyrics by her mother, Hana Sorrosová.

After graduating from secondary school, Jiří Vondráček went on to study acting at the Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (DAMU). He later continued his studies at the Folk Conservatory, where he graduated in 1975 with a degree in Composition and Conducting.

Hana Sorrosová studied at the the Faculty of Arts at Charles University and then tried dramaturgy at DAMU. She wrote the lyrics to more than four hundred popular songs for a number of Czech singers, including Karel Gott.

Lucie Vondráčková herself is the niece of the famous Czech pop star Helena Vondráčková.
