In this series we present 100 songs which have gone down in the history of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic. On Czech Radio’s web pages you can find a poll, in which you can vote for the best hit from the past century. We continue with the year 2002.
The Winter Olympics took place in Salt Lake City in February. Aleš Valenta won gold, and Kateřina Neumannová won two silver medals.
On July 12th, Prime Minister Vladimír Špidla was appointed to office.
On August 12th, catastrophic floods began in Bohemia and in Southern Moravia.
More than 40,000 listeners and readers voted to select the 2002 Hit of the Year from among the thirty most played songs on Czech radio stations. The poll was won by the song “What Hurts, Will Stop Hurting,” sung by Miroslav Žbirka and the singer Martha.
Miroslav Žbirka, nicknamed Meky, who was popular in both former Czechoslovakia and on the Czech and Slovak music scenes, placed the song on the “Blue Album.” It was nominated for the 2002 Angel Award in the Pop-Album of the Year category. If you did not know the singer Martha, you should know that she was a singer from the dance project, Space Junkies. A lot of experimentation went into this album and even casting Martha was an experiment. It turned out to be one hundred percent successful.
