Steep increase in death rate in 2020

The number of deaths in the Czech Republic increased by around 15 percent in 2020, according to data released by the Czech Statistics Office. It is the steepest increase on record since 1950.

According to preliminary data, 129,100 people died last year, which is almost 17,000 more than in 2019.

The reasons for the increase in mortality are not reported in the statistics, but are generally ascribed to the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the Ministry of Health, 11,872 people died of Covid-19 or related complications last year.
