Record number of Czechs switched electricity supplier last year

A record number of Czechs, more than 713,000, switched their electricity supplier in 2021, according to data on the website of the Czech electricity and gas market operator OTE. This is an increase by 268,000 when compared to 2020.

The high number is a consequence of the bankruptcy of the country’s largest alternative energy supplier Bohemia Energy, which provided power for 900,000 customers, in October of last year. Several other smaller companies were also forced to shut down due to the rapid rise of energy prices.

The electricity market has been fully liberalized in the Czech Republic since 2006, and the gas market since 2007. Since then, customers have been able to choose their energy supplier.
