<channel><atom:link href='https://english.radio.cz/rcz-rss/show/audio/8619771' rel='self' type='application/rss+xml' /><pubDate>Thu, 01 Jan 1970 01:00:00 +0100</pubDate><lastBuildDate>Thu, 23 Jul 2026 05:26:45 +0200</lastBuildDate><title>The graves of hundreds of &quot;White Czechs&quot; restored in Vladivostok</title><link>https://english.radio.cz/graves-hundreds-white-czechs-restored-vladivostok-8619771</link><copyright>© 2026 Radio Prague International</copyright><description>In September 1920, the last Czechoslovak legionnaires, who fought alongside the Allies in Russia during the First World War, and then found themselves caught up in the Russian Revolution, left Russian soil for France after months of travelling through harsh Siberian tundra. As the European front had been blocked by the Civil War that followed the revolution, the White Czechs, as they were called, were forced to travel via the Pacific port of Vladivostok and the United States. But the slow evacuation via the Trans-Siberian railway took its toll, and thousands of the returning soldiers died on the journey, to be buried in mass graves along the railway. Now, more than 85 years later, one such cemetery has recently been renovated in honour of the soldiers' plight.</description><language>en</language><managingEditor>cr@radio.cz (Cesky Rozhlas)</managingEditor><webMaster>webmaster@radio.cz (CRo Webmaster)</webMaster><image>
