PM: Government not to blame for rising inflation
Prime Minister Andrej Babiš says his government is not responsible for the level of inflation currently being felt in the Czech Republic. In response to a question from a Pirate Party MP in the lower house as to why prices were rising so much in the country, Mr. Babiš said that inflation was to be found everywhere in Europe and in the United States, in part due to rising oil and gas prices.
The PM said that if the Czech Republic had the euro instead of its own currency the crown prices would be going up even more. He said finding a solution was a matter for the Czech National Bank, not his cabinet.
Year-on-year inflation rose to 4.1 percent in August from 3.4 percent in July, with last month’s inflation rate the highest seen since November 2008.
