Czechia has made a donation of equipment worth CZK 6.5 million to a maternity hospital in Zambia. The Czech minister of foreign affairs, Jan Lipavský, visited the Mother and Child Hospital in Lusaka as part of visit that has also taken in Angola.

In addition to the special equipment for two hospital rooms, Czechia will also provide the facility with a modern ambulance during the summer.

Zambia is one of two countries on the African continent where Czech development aid is targeted.

Mr. Lipavský’s five-day trip is due to end on Friday.

Czech banks and building societies provided new mortgage loans at a value of CZK 12.3 billion in May, which was a month-on-month rise of 17 percent, according to data released by an industry body on Thursday.

The interest rate on fresh mortages rose almost imperceptibly, from 5.89 percent in April to 5.9 percent last month.

Both the volume and the number of mortgages in May were close to March values and – taking seasonal developments into account – are the highest since the middle of 2022, when the market began to freeze markedly.

The figures for the last three months suggest that the Czech mortgage market is recovering slightly, although it remains significantly subdued compared to the past.

President Petr Pavel has been speaking about his first 100 days in office, a landmark that falls on Saturday. In an outdoor news conference at Prague Castle on Thursday he said that he regarded as his greatest success as starting in the direction he wishes to follow for the five years of his term.

The head of state told reporters his vision was built on two pillars: reinforcing Czechia’s position in the community of democratic, pro-Western countries; and changing the mood in society so that people believe they can effect change if they wish.

He reiterated an earlier statement that he would prefer to be criticised for being overactive than for a half-hearted start.

Wednesday’s award followed another for 2018, when Ledecká won the same event at the Winter Olympics and, sensationally, the alpine skiing Super-G.

NATO member states should be clear at the upcoming summit in Vilnius about Ukraine's prospects of joining the military alliance after the war is over, President Petr Pavel said in an interview with Radio Free Europe published on Thursday. He added that Ukraine joining the EU and NATO is the only guarantee of stability in the region and would benefit the alliance itself, as it would "undoubtedly be the most experienced army in NATO".

Russia's invasion of Ukraine will be one of the key topics discussed at the NATO summit in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, in July. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said last week that the alliance must discuss options for providing Ukraine with security guarantees for after Russia's war against the country ends. Ukraine's NATO membership bid is mainly supported by the countries in the alliance's eastern wing. Western member states are still more hesitant to accept Kyiv's entry.
