    Czechia’s footballers beat defending champions Germany 2:1 in the group stage at the European Under-21 Championship in Georgia on Sunday evening. The Czechs went ahead on 34 minutes through Václav Sejk before the Germans equalised in the second half with an Angelo Stiller goal. However Czechia took all three points with a strike from Martin Vitík three minutes from the end of regular time.

    The Czechs’ next game is against Israel on Wednesday.

    Petra Kvitová has picked up her 31st WTA title after winning tennis’s Berlin Open on Sunday. The world no. 9 and no. 7 seed in the competition defeated Croatia's Donna Vekic 6:2, 7:6 in the final to celebrate her sixth triumph on grass.

    Kvitová, who is 33, dominated the duel in one hour and 43 minutes after going through the tournament in the German capital without losing a single set.

    A memorial for the victims of the Nazi atrocity at the Czech village of Ležáky in East Bohemia was held on Sunday. The last survivor of the 1942 tragedy, Jarmila Dolezalova, laid 11 white roses at the memorial, symbolizing the 11 children murdered in Ležáky as part of retaliation for the killing of the Germans’ regional governor.

    The speaker of the Senate, Miloš Vystrčil, told the assembled that the task of mankind was to light the fire of hope; it is up to everyone whether the principles of solidarity and humanity prevails over the desire to rule over all, he said.

    The Czech minister of the interior, Vít Rakušan, says the Russian regime is a “bear with clay feet” and that various groups are fighting for power around Russian President Vladimir Putin, weakening his position.

    Mr. Rakušan made the comment on a Czech Television politics debate show on Sunday.

    Meanwhile the Minister for European Affairs, Martin Dvořák, told CNN Prima News that the actions of the Wagner mercenary army seemed to follow a well-prepared script. Mr. Dvořák said if Czechia didn’t help Ukraine the Russians would be coming for it next.

    The Czech government will on Wednesday discuss a draft law that should put into practice a package aimed at consolidating the public finances, the Czech News Agency reported on Sunday.

    The proposal, which amends more than 60 laws, contains measures that require legislative changes.

    It does not include cuts in subsidies and reductions in state spending, which are expected to cover about half of the planned savings of CZK 150.7 billion over two years.

    The package also includes an amendment to the Gambling Act which, among other things, clarifies the rules for the legal operation of online gambling.

    The Czech minister of foreign affairs, Jan Lipavský, has convened a meeting of his ministry’s Crisis Staff on Sunday evening to discuss the situation in Russia. As well as analysing events surrounding the uprising by the Wagner mercenary army, the meeting will discuss the coordination of responses at the Europe Union and NATO levels, the ministry said in a press release.

    Mr. Lipavský on Saturday reiterated that Czechs were advised not to visit Russia.

    In addition to Greece, Egypt, Croatia and Turkey, where Czechs most frequently go for summer holidays, interest is also growing this year in previously less desirable destinations, the Czech News Agency reported on Sunday, citing tour operators.

    Agencies say they are now selling far more holidays to traditionally less popular destinations such as Albania, Montenegro and Madeira, citing competitive prices as the main draw.

    The lower house of the Czech Parliament is due to debate a Defence Cooperation Agreement with the United States at a session that begins on Tuesday afternoon. The two countries’ defence ministers signed the treaty, which creates a framework for closer cooperation, last month, but it still needs to be ratified. The opposition Freedom and Direct Democracy are critical of the agreement but the government has a comfortable majority in the Chamber of Deputies.

    In the session beginning Tuesday MPs are also expected to discuss a marriage equality bill, as well as a move to enshrine marriage as between a man and a woman, and a commission to investigate alleged wrongdoing at the Office of the President under ex-head of state Miloš Zeman.

    Czech citizens are not currently in any immediate danger in connection with events in Russia, Czech Defence Minister Jana Černochová said on Saturday. She told the Czech News Agency after a meeting with the chief of the General Staff, Karel Řehka, and military intelligence chief, Jan Beroun, that Czechia was closely monitoring the situation.

    The minister said the situation showed the regime in Russia is not nearly as strong or as stable as President Putin’s propaganda tries to claim, adding that after 30 years tanks were again headed for Moscow.
