    Blaga’s Lessons by Bulgarian director Stephan Komandarev won the Grand Prix – Crystal Globe at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Eli Skorcheva picked up the Best Actress Award for the lead role  in the social drama about an elderly woman forced to abandon her moral principles after losing all her savings . The Best Actor Award went to Herbert Nordrum for his role in the Scandinavian absurd psychological comedy The Hypnosis.

    The Special Jury Prize went to the Iranian film Empty Nets by Behrooz Karamizade.

    The Best Director Award went to Babak Jalali for Fremont, a comedy drama about new beginnings in life. The Lebanese documentary Dancing on the Edge of a Volcano, about a group of filmmakers facing obstacles in their creative work due to the difficult situation in the country, received the Special Jury Mention.

    The Proxima Grand Prix went to Birth, a South Korean film about partners who have to make a life-changing decision due to unexpected pregnancy and the Proxima Special Jury Prize was awarded to the Czech film Brutal Heat by Albert Hospodářský.

    The American actress Robin Wright and Czech actress Daniela Kolářová both received the President’s Award at the festival’s closing gala ceremony on Saturday night.

    Hollywood actor Russell Crowe was presented with the Crystal Globe for his contribution to world cinema and Swedish actress and producer Alicia Vikander received the President's Award at the festival’s opening.

    The 57th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival screened more than 140 feature films and documentaries.

    The decline in real incomes is making life difficult for a growing number of Czechs, according to a survey by the LMC agency. According to the results of a June poll, 55 per cent of people are having difficulty covering their basic needs from their income and are having to dip into their savings, while a fifth of employees are experiencing significant difficulties. According to LMC, which operates the Jobs.cz and Prace.cz job sites, 12 percent of employees have experienced serious financial difficulties in the last 12 months, such as foreclosures or a visit by a debt collector.

    Meteorologists have warned the public to brace for extreme temperatures in the coming days. Sunday  should see daytime highs of 33 to 36 degrees Celsius and temperatures are expected to remain over the 30 degree mark for most of the coming week. People are being advised to increase their intake of liquids and stay out of the sun as much as possible. Older people and children are particularly at risk.

    In view of the dry and extremely hot weather there is a ban on lighting fires outdoors and mounted police are patrolling the Bohemian Switzerland National Park which was ravaged by a devastating fire last year.

    Czech-made Skorpion sub-machine guns have repeatedly been used in shootings by gangs in Great Britain whose members are willing to use guns to 'settle even minor disputes', the Daily Mail reported citing police sources. As many as 120 gangs are reported to be operating around Merseyside and as many as eight Skorpion sub-machine guns are now believed to be in circulation around Liverpool. They are believed to have been smuggled into the country from Europe. Over 200,000 Skorpion sub-machine guns were produced in the Uherský Brod arms factory from 1963 to 1979.

    The 57th International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary will close with a gala award ceremony on Saturday night. American actress Robin Wright and Czech actress Daniela Kolářová will receive the President’s Award from the festival’s long-time president Jiří Bartoška. Hollywood actor Russell Crowe was presented with the Crystal Globe for his contribution to world cinema and Swedish actress and producer Alicia Vikander received the President's Award at the festival’s opening. American actress Patricia Clarkson was on the main jury this year. The 57th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival screened more than 140 films.

    The memorandum on cooperation between the Czech and Ukrainian ministries of defense, signed during Presidnet Zelensky’s visit to Prague, will strengthen cooperation in the arms industry, the Czech Defense Ministry said in a press release. The document will help to develop closer cooperation especially in the repair and maintenance of weapons, development of weapons and ammunition, and modernization and repair of armored equipment. The ministry says the aim of the memorandum is to lay the foundations for long-term cooperation that will continue after the end of the war in Ukraine and help Czech companies to establish themselves on the Ukrainian market.

    The European Roma Grassroots Organisations Network ERGO and the Ukrainian Roma organisation ICO Roma Women Fund "Chiricli" have called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to appeal to Ukrainian refugees to respect diversity and refrain from violence. In a statement published by the news site Romea.cz, the organizations made the call in response to two recent attacks against Romanies in Czechia. They have also appealed to the Czech police and Czech Interior Ministry for the incidents to be thoroughly investigated and the perpetrators brought to justice. A Romany man died in one of the incidents. The police have not confirmed the nationality of the attackers, merely stating that they had detained foreign nationals in connection with the incidents.

    Sixty-four percent of Czechs plan to earn extra money on the side or take a second job to cover the cost of their summer holidays this year, according to a survey conducted by the Patron GO agency. Fourteen percent of respondents said they were considering taking out a loan to cover the expenses. The majority of people polled (78 percent) are planning only one vacation this year. About 60 percent of respondents say they plan to economize and will not spend more than 10,000 crowns per person on holidays this year. A quarter expect to stay within 20,000 crowns per person.
