    The Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Markéta Pekarová Adamová, is set to begin a four-day visit to Israel on Sunday. During her stay, the Czech lower house speaker will discuss political and security issues with her Israeli counterpart Amir Ohana and chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Yoel Edelstein.

    On Wednesday, Ms Pekarová Adamová will be received by Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog. The lower house speaker, who will be accompanied by a delegation of Czech businessmen, will also pay tribute to the victims of the Holocaust at the Yad Vashem memorial in Jerusalem and meet with representatives of Czech expats in Tel Aviv.

    A commemorative event to honour the memory of the Czechoslovak paratroopers who assassinated Nazi governor Reinhard Heydrich was held on Sunday at Prague’s Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, where they died after an SS siege 81 years ago today.

    The event was attended by several hundred people,  including the Speaker of the Czech lower house, Markéta Pekarová Adamová, and Senator Pavel Fischer.

    Another event commemorating the brave act of resistance took place at the memorial of Czechoslovak Army’s paratroopers at Prague’s district of Dejvice.

    The Czech national football squad defeated Faroe Islands 3:0 in the third qualifying match for next year’s European Championship in Germany.

    Ladislav Krejčí Jr. and Václav Černý scored in the first half, with Černý adding another goal in the second half.

    With four points from a possible six, the Czech Republic currently sit at the top of Group E, four points above second-placed Albania.

    Czech kayaker Jiří Prskavec took the gold medal at the Canoe World Cup event in Tacen, Slovenia. The 30-year-old Czech finished four and a half seconds ahead of his compatriot, Vít Přindiš, securing his second gold medal this year. Přindiš is currently leading the overall World Cup ranking in the men’s K1 event.

    In the women’s event, the Czech slalom canoeist Veronika Vojtová finished eighth third in the C1 category.

    President Petr Pavel is expected to attend the UN General Assembly due to take place in New York City in September, his advisor Petr Kolář said in an interview for the daily Právo on Saturday. The former diplomat didn’t want to reveal details about any other possible trips abroad.

    The UN General Assembly brings together heads of state and government and in the past former it was attended by presidents Václav Havel, Václav Klaus and Miloš Zeman. In recent years, Czechia has been represented at the meeting by a foreign minister or prime minister.

    Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov has announced the signing of a declaration of intent by Czechia and Slovakia on purchasing and maintaining infantry fighting vehicles.

    The document was signed on Friday on the sidelines of the meeting of the Contact Group on Ukraine in Brussels by his Czech and Slovak counterparts, Jana Černochová and Martin Sklenár.

    According to Mr. Reznikov, it is an important step in the cooperation between the countries.

    The Ukrainian state concern Ukroboronprom and the Czech arms company VOP CZ have recently agreed on the joint repair of T-64 tanks at the plant in the north Bohemian town of Nový Jičín.

    Czech golfer Louis Klein has advanced to the final round of the Golf Challenge tournament at the Kaskáda course near Brno, becoming the youngest ever player to make a cut on Europe’s second highest circuit, at 13 years, 9 months and 24 days.

    The Czech player, who took up golf at the age of five, made the cut in 35th place after shooting a par 71 in both the first and second rounds.

    Four films from Prague’s FAMU have been shortlisted for the 2023 Yugo BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Student Awards, the competition jury announced on Saturday.

    They include animated films Electra by Darja Kascheyeva, Dede is Dead by Philipp Kastner and Rising Above by Natalia Durchánková, and a feature film by Petr Pylypchuk called Eighth Day.

    The jury selected a total of 79 films from more than 750 entries. The finalists will be announced on 7 July.

    A sixth edition of the open air festival Arena, founded by the Forman brothers, gets underway at Prague’ Smíchov embankment on Saturday afternoon. Over the course of two weeks, the festival will offer a number of theatre and circus performances, concerts, as well as workshops for children.

    Among the highlights of this year’s event will be a motorcycle stunt show called Mortal Juice! by French acrobatic team Le Mur de la Mort and the performance Low Cost Paradise by the world-known French ensemble Cirque Pardi!.
