    According to foreign ministry data, Czechia provided 20.86 billion crowns in development aid in 2022. Compared to 2021, this is an increase of 12 billion crowns. Aid to Ukraine amounted to 14 billion crowns last year. The foreign ministry has listed six priority countries for development cooperation, namely Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ethiopia, Georgia, Cambodia, Moldova and Zambia. The Czech Development Agency spent 313 million crowns on development aid projects last year.

    The UN Agency for Refugees (UNHCR) is transferring more than 37 million crowns (EUR 1.56 million) to Czechia to help with the integration of migrants. The money is to be used for Czech language courses, legal and social counselling and leisure activities for refugees, according to Ivana Milenkovičová, head of the UNHCR office in Prague. According to the ministry's data, there are presently 347 750 refugees in Czechia, most of them Ukrainian nationals.

    Several hundred Roma gathered in Pardubice to demand increased security for Romanies in the wake of a fight in the town on Saturday night involving 18 people, in which a Romany man was allegedly stabbed by a Ukrainian national. Three people were detained by the police who have not confirmed that the attacker was Ukrainian, stating merely that the man was a foreign national. It is not clear what sparked the conflict. There have been previous reports on conflicts between Romanies and Ukrainian refugees.

    The Russian cultural centre in Prague, run by the Moscow state agency, has come under close scrutiny by the Czech authorities, Czech Television reported. According to the national broadcaster, the centre has been engaged in translating President Putin’s speeches and official Kremlin propaganda materials into Czech. The Czech authorities are now investigating the centre's activities. The centre has diplomatic status and employs around ten people.

    Prices on the Czech market are falling and inflation is likely to drop to below 10 per cent within two months, Czech National Bank Governor Aleš Michl said in an interview for Novinky.cz.  He said that the bank board was imposing the tightest monetary policy in twenty-five years with the aim to bring inflation to around two percent. The annual inflation rate in Czechia eased to a 15-month low of 11.1% in May 2023 from 12.7% in the previous month. It was over 15 percent in December of last year.

    Scottish actor, director and producer Ewan McGregor received the President's Award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on Saturday night. McGregor appeared at the festival together with his daughter, actress and producer Clara McGregor, with whom he later presented their joint film You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder, a road movie about a father-daughter relationship. Among the celebrities present at the festival are Russel Crowe and Alicia Vikander as well as American actress Patricia Clarkson, who is on the main jury this year. Actress Robin Wright is expected to arrive next week and will receive an award on the closing night of the festival.

    Czech kayaker Jiří Prskavec, has became European champion in water slalom for the sixth time. The 30-year-old Czech successfully defended the 2022 world championship title at the European Games in Krakow and secured Czechia’s place at next year's Olympic Games in Paris.

    Tighter conditions for aid to Ukrainian refugees in Czechia have come into effect as of July 1. In line with an amendment to the law, Ukrainian refugees who have been in the country for longer than 5 months will no longer get accommodation for free. The state will continue to cover housing for all vulnerable groups of refugees – i.e. minors under 18, students of Czech universities, seniors over 65, people with disabilities and their care givers, as well as pregnant women and people caring for children under six.

    The war in Ukraine will remain an important topic on the Visegrad Four agenda despite existing differences between the member states, the Czech Foreign Ministry said as the country took over chairmanship of the alliance on July 1. "We are witnessing the biggest military aggression in Europe since the Second World War and we cannot pretend that nothing is happening,” Jaroslav Kurfürst, a senior official at the Czech Foreign Ministry told Czech Radio. He said the Czech presidency of the Visegrad Four is based on three pillars - striving for a secure and advanced society, an innovative and interconnected economy, and support for Ukraine.
