The incidence of scabies in Czechia continues to increase, according to the State Institute of Health. In the first six months of 2023, doctors recorded 4,873 cases, compared to 5,276 for the whole of last year. It is the highest figure on the past 20 years.

Experts attribute the rise in scabies incidence to the decline in population immunity, massive migration and increased tourism.

The main symptom of scabies, which is transmitted mostly by close body contact or through bed linen, is severe itching and a rash on the skin.

Czech Government Commissioner for Human Rights Klára Šimáčková Laurenčíková and Czech Interior Minister Vít Rakušan have criticized the Hungarian government for imposing a fine on one of the country’s bookstore for publicly displaying a copy of an LGBT-themed British graphic novel.

Hungary’s second-largest bookstore, Lira, has received a fine of 12 million forints (approximately 36,000 UD dollars) for selling British author Alice Oseman’s Heartstopper among other books for minors without closed wrapping.

According to the Czech commissioner, the Hungarian law banning the “display and promotion of homosexuality” to children and the resulting fine are a restriction of human rights.
