Spot checks on Czechia’s border with Slovakia are set to continue until at least November 2. The Czech government decided to extend an initial 10-day period of controls that would have ended on Friday, the minister of the interior, Vít Rakušan, announced on Wednesday evening after a government meeting.
Czechia, Poland and Austria introduced controls on their borders with Slovakia last Wednesday with a view to curbing the number of migrants illegally attempting to use their territory to reach further west.

Video mapping on the facade of the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius on Karlín Square will open Prague’s Signal Festival on Thursday evening. This year’s edition of the festival of light art, which combines free and paid events, is the 11th.
The festival will offer a total of 20 installations over four days. In addition to the Karlín church, video mapping will also illuminate the Municipal Library building on Mariánské náměstí.

Three planes to repatriate Czech nationals from Israel following the Hamas attack on that country are to be sent in a 24-hour period, Prime Minister Petr Fiala said after a government meeting on Wednesday. The first of the aircraft left Prague’s Kbely airfield just after 7 pm on Wednesday.
On Tuesday night Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský brought 34 Czechs back from Israel on a government plane, after meeting top local officials on a surprise visit to the country.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Prague has set up a help line for people seeking to return to Czechia from Israel.

President Petr Pavel will receive his Moldovan counterpart, Maia Sandu, in Prague next Monday, the Office of the President said on Wednesday.
In addition to the meeting at Prague Castle, the two heads of state will also attend a business forum and the 27th edition of the Forum 2000 conference, where they will deliver opening speeches.
Ms. Sandu will also visit the headquarters of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, as well as meeting Prime Minister Petr Fiala, before departing on Tuesday.

The Czech lower house is set to vote on the government’s austerity package on Friday morning, following a decision of the Chamber of Deputies on Wednesday. However a debate on the measures – which are in their third and final reading – was still taking place on Wednesday afternoon. The session has been marked by criticism from the opposition, along with personal attacks.
According to the coalition government its austerity package, which includes an overhaul of the pension system, will help markedly reduce the state budget deficit in the coming years.

The Prague government is sending a second plane to bring back Czechs seeking to leave Israel following a Hamas attack on the country that began on Saturday. The Czech minister of foreign affairs, Jan Lipavský, announced the news early on Wednesday afternoon.
On Tuesday night Mr. Lipavský brought 34 Czechs back from Israel on a government plane after meeting top local officials on a surprise visit to the country.
The minister said further planes would be sent after the second one on Wednesday.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Prague has set up a help line for people seeking to return to Czechia from Israel.

President Petr Pavel’s latest candidate for Constitutional Court justice, Pavel Simon, will evidently not be appointed to the country’s highest court. Two separate Senate committees discussing the matter on Wednesday failed to support his candidacy; only one of five members of the Human Rights Committee backed him.
Mr. Simon is due to face a grilling in the upper house next week, with legislators reportedly planning to raise rulings of his that were overturned by the Constitutional Court, as well as his business activities and new age “school”.

The minister of industry and trade, Jozef Síkela, says attacks on him by a Czech newspaper owned by Daniel Křetínský should raise questions about how the billionaire entrepreneur uses his media assets in other states.
Mr. Síkela told the Financial Times on Wednesday that it was “strange” the daily Blesk had run stories critical of the government’s purchase of a gas pipeline operator that Mr. Křetínský had also bid for.
The businessman sold his stake in France’s Le Monde but still owns radio stations and magazines in the country. He is reportedly interested in buying the UK’s Daily Telegraph.

Sales of new hybrid cars in Czechia rose by 42 percent year-on-year in the first three quarters of 2023 to nearly 30,000, according to data from the Car Importers Association released on Wednesday.
The number of plug-in hybrid cars sold went up by two-thirds compared to in the same period last year, while electric cars saw an increase in sales of 61 percent.
